University of Lodz is one of eleven Polish universities that in 1988 in Bologna, within the walls of the oldest university in the world, signed Magna Charta Universitatum, a declaration and affirmation of the fundamental principles upon which the mission of universities should be based (the then Rector Leszek Wojtczak did it on behalf of the University of Lodz). Rector of the University of Lodz, Prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska signed the declaration once again during the pandemic (online) and in person in Bologna last year
During that ceremony, the video promoting our university was selected from among several hundred videos from around the world and, together with only a dozen or so others, presented to participants from all over the world. This was one of the reasons why the University of Lodz has the honour of organising the anniversary conference in Lodz, for the first time in Poland and for the second time outside the University of Bologna.

On Monday, 23 October 2023, during the so-called pre-conference, a panel devoted to integration between urban communities and universities in Poland and Ukraine was organised. It was attended by scientists and students from Ukraine, which is experiencing Russian aggression. On Tuesday, 24 October, participants meeting at the Prof. Wacław Szubert Assembly Hall after being welcomed by the Rector of the University of Lodz, Prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska, are focusing on the issues of this year's leading conference "Universities and Re-Construction of Cities: the Role of Research and Education".

Ceremony for the signature of the Magna Charta Universitatum MCU2020 by representatives of 36 more universities is scheduled for Wednesday, 25 October. After the ceremony, the number of universities-signatories of the declaration from around the world will amount to almost one thousand.
